Mijn favoriete album van 2023
Dat album heet Chapters en is na het debuut Got To Let Go uit 2014 pas het tweede album van de Britse singer/songwriter en multi-instrumentalist Nate Williams. Inclusief een exclusief Zoom-interview met de artiest in kwestie.

De definitie van het beste album van het jaar heeft voor mij alles te maken met hoe vaak je de muziek hebt beluisterd in de afgelopen 12 maanden. Ooit sprak ik een recensent van Muziekkrant Oor over het beste album van dat jaar, traditioneel gekozen door de belangrijke muziekjournalisten van Nederland. Die nummer 1 had hij in zijn persoonlijke lijstje ook helemaal bovenaan staan, maar hij vertelde erbij dat hij die plaat nauwelijks had gedraaid, gek genoeg. Daar heb ik dus een totaal andere kijk op.

ps. Is dat veel? 61.632 geluisterde minuten in een jaar?Het schijnt dat de luisteraar uit de VS de meeste luisterminuten tot zich neemt, namelijk 140 per dag. Even rekenen. 61.632 gedeeld door 365 dagen is bijna 170 minuten per dag. Dat is een half uur per dag meer dan de gemiddelde Noord-Amerikaan.

En dan te bedenken dat ik van de resterende 2 zangers en 2 bands in de top 5 van artiesten de albums uit eerdere jaren heb beluisterd. Chapters van de jonge alleskunner (hij zingt, componeert, produceert en speelt nagenoeg alle instrumenten) uit Bangor, Noord-Wales, is uit mijn lijst van meest beluisterde muziek van dit jaar het enige album dat ook daadwerkelijk in (juli) 2023 werd uitgebracht. Daarnaast staat de Franse blazersband A-P Connection alleen in mijn top 5 omdat er twee songs met Nate op hun Wide Vision uit 2021 staan. Dan de 5 topnummers; die zijn bizar genoeg allen gezongen, geschreven en gespeeld door Nate (with a little help from hij friends). De reden dat er maar 1 song van Chapters in mijn top 5 van topnummers staat (de rest zijn singles van Nate die hij de afgelopen jaren heeft uitgebracht) is omdat ik Dan is de geluidkwaliteit van het gebodene aanmerkelijk beter. Zoveel aandacht voor 1 artiest leidt naar de vraag: wat maakt deze onbekende grootheid zo goed? Onderstaande korte bio is misschien alleszeggend:

Maar toch maakte die bio me niet minder nieuwsgierig naar de man die mij vanaf de lente in een muzikale houtgreep hield, hetgeen helemaal niet onprettig voelde. Ik besloot om hem te gaan opsporen voor een interview. Via Nate's pagina op Bandcamp vond ik zijn mailadres en binnen een paar weken had ik een Zoom afspraak met hem, een interview dat door Paul Aandewiel werd ge-edit en deels werd gefilmd en dat hieronder te zien is. Hoort zegt Nate voort!
My favorite album of 2023
That album is called Chapters and, after the 2014 debut Got To Let Go, is only the second album by British singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nate Williams. Including an exclusive Zoom interview with the artist in question!
For me, the definition of the best album of the year has everything to do with how many times you've listened to the music in the past 12 months. I once spoke to a reviewer from Muziekkrant Oor about the best album of that year, traditionally chosen by the important music journalists of the Netherlands. He also had that number 1 at the top of his personal list, but he said that he had hardly played that record, strangely enough. So I have a completely different view on that.

And it's good to realize that from the remaining 2 singers and 2 bands the albums that I listened to were from previous years. Yes, chapters by the young all-rounder (he sings, composes, produces and plays almost all instruments) from Bangor, North Wales, is the only album from my list of most listened to music of this year that was actually released in (July) 2023. In addition, the French brass band A-P Connection is only in my top 5 because there are two songs with Nate on their 2021 album Wide Vision. Then the 5 top songs; Bizarrely enough, they were all sung, written and played by Nate (with a little from his friends, like Horn House, a sort of electronic Blood, Sweat & Tears in overdrive) The reason there is only 1 song from Chapters in my top 5 songs (the rest are singles from Nate that he has released in recent years) is because I bought the album on Bandcamp. Then the sound quality of what is offered is considerably better.
So much attention for one artist leads to the question: what makes Nate so good? The short bio below may say it all:

But that bio didn't make me any less curious about the man who had me in a musical grip since the spring, which didn't feel unpleasant at all. I decided to track him down for an interview. I found his email address through Nate's page on Bandcamp and within a few weeks I had a Zoom appointment with him, an interview that was partly filmed & edited by Paul Aandewiel and can be seen right underneath the Dutch version of this article.
